Adult Education & Health Careers for Adults
at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School: Training Tech Valley Today

The Adult Education program at the Capital Region Career & Technical School is tailored to meet the occupational and educational needs of adults living in the Capital Region. While most programs are geared toward adults age 21 and older, others are open to younger adults, including a secondary school GED program for students age 18-21. Thousands of of adult students have advanced their professional and personal lives through our Health Careers Center.

Adult Education at our Health Careers Center
Programs in the health-related professions are offered specifically for adult students at Career & Tech's Health Careers Center, which is located at Rosewood [Plaza] campus, across from our Albany campus at 501 New Karner Rd. Course offerings include Practical Nursing for Adult Students, Nurse Assistant for Adult Students, and exam prep classes.

Adult Practical Nursing Program:

The Capital Region Career & Technical School offers a separate Practical Nursing program just for adult students. The program encompasses 1,100 hours of classroom and clinical time, and students are eligible to take the N.Y.S. Practical Nursing Examination upon completion. All levels of patient care are covered in our program as well as hands-on supervised clinical experiences at local health care facilities. The Practical Nursing program also gives students a solid foundation to pursue advanced college training.

For more information on the Adult PN program, visit the Practical Nursing page or contact: the Health Careers Center at (518) 862-4709 or nmccullo@gw.neric.org.

Adult Nurse Assistant Program:
The Capital Region Career & Technical School offers a separate Nurse Assistant Program for Adult Students, with schedule and locations suited to their particular needs. The Nurse Assistant curriculum prepares students to test to become New York State Certified Nurse Assistants and be qualified to work in any nursing home in the state.

Career and Technical Education
To compete in today's highly technical world, more and more adults are going back to school. A technical education provides unlimited opportunities within the job market. Adults can enroll in any of the courses offered by the Career & Technical School or combine them with the GED program to learn a trade while getting a high school diploma.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
ESOL classes offer self-paced, individualized lessons to help students improve English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The classes are free to students age 21 year or older. An ESOL home study program is also available, and is also free.

Forklift Training for Adult Students
A 15-hour Forklift Operator Training Course for Adult Students provides classroom and hands-on instruction necessary to earn an operator’s permit card as required by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Operating a forklift is a marketable skill sought by many employers. Forklifts, also known as lift trucks and fork trucks, are used extensively in business and industry at places as diverse as warehouses and manufacturing facilities to construction sites and farms, to shopping centers, retail stores, colleges and schools.

GED (General Educational Development*) diploma:
General Educational Development (GED) classes provide assessment to identify needs, self-paced learning, and individualized lessons designed specifically for each student. To prepare for the GED exam, adults study language arts (reading and writing), math, science, and social studies. GED students must be 21 years or older. Classes are free.

A GED program is also offered through the Adult Education program for secondary school students age 18-21.

*GED also has been referred to as General Education Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma. GED ® and the GED Testing Service ® are registered trademarks of the American Council on Education ®

GRASP:
GRASP, a GED home study program, is available to adults who can't attend a traditional GED class due to transportation, child care and other personal concerns. Assessment is done to identify student needs, and individualized lessons are designed. This program is free and is available in English and Spanish.

Grant-funded courses
From time to time, special grants enable the Adult Education program to offer courses such as Heavy Equipment Operation/CDL Permit Prep, which was made possible in 2009 by grant funds from Appalachian Regional Commission.

Programs for employers:
The Capital Region BOCES Adult Education program can develop programs tailored to the needs of local employers and industries. For example, we have provided instruction in Welding and Computer Aided Manufacturing
for engineers from Knolls Atomic Power Labs, in Diesel Electrical Systems (Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Repair) for mechanics and mechanics helpers from CDTA, and facilities and equipment for Automotive instruction for Chrysler technicians. Adult Education has also taken GED classes on the road for local employers including the University at Albany and CSEA.

Welding for Adult Students
Responding to the need for an expertly trained technical workforce in Tech Valley, the Capital Region BOCES Adult Education program is launched 450-hour Welder Certification Program for Adult Students. Students successfully completing the course will earn national credentials including: American Welding Society (AWS) SENSE Level 1 Welder Certification, National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Phase 1 Welder Endorsement, and federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour Construction Safety Card.

Through technical shop coursework and classroom lessons in weld theory, students will learn GTAW orbital welding, shielded metal arc (stick) welding, gas metal arc (MIG) welding, gas tungsten arc welding (TIG), flux cored arc welding, pipe welding (stick and TIG), and oxy-fuel cutting and plasma cutting.
